About

Welcome to Roger Spence Photography

I was born and grew up in Newcastle Upon Tyne. From an early age I was fascinated by photographs, in my early years they were the only medium that was available to take you out of everyday life in Newcastle. At the age of 11 I took the family Kodak Brownie to scout camp with an 8 photograph film. Eight photographs for a week was a totally different scenario to the digital age we are now in.

From then until I bought my first digital camera whilst on holiday in San Francisco I have taken a lot of photographs but they were really only snaps and not very good ones at that. With a digital camera I found that instant access to the results of my efforts was a good way to learn what the camera saw as opposed to what I wanted it to see.

After 13 years working at Hawthorn Leslie's Shipyard at Hebburn and 34 years with the Maritime & Coastguard Agency I retired in the autumn of 2008. Since then I have been able to spend a bit more time on photography and have also attended a local course. My own view is that I am now taking the occasional decent photograph but I would like, through this site, to obtain the views of others in the hope that this will help me continue to learn and improve.

Since 1994 I have lived in Lymington on the South Coast of England. This gives me easy access to the New Forest and some splendid coastline. Now that I have this site up and running my intention is to use it to give me a focus and an outlet for photographic projects. I am now putting my mind into setting up a project for the next few months and another for the winter.

If you have any comments on my photographs or my site I would be pleased to receive them.

Thank you for visiting my site.
